All India, 23rd May 2014: Jamaica’s ‘village of eight rivers’ sways to the sounds of cool jazz by top local stars and internationally renowned artists at the Ocho Rios Jazz Festival every year. Jamaica’s Ocho Rios Jazz Festival will take place between 8th to 15th June this year. It will be celebrating its 24th Anniversary with exciting days filled with events of great music and superb entertainment. The festival showcases international as well as Jamaican and Caribbean Jazz musicians and artists.

Born out of a mix of African and European music traditions, jazz is all about music that includes qualities such as swinging, improvising, group interaction, developing an individual voice and being open to different musical possibilities. Jamaica has a long and productive jazz tradition. The English speaking Caribbean island has always been the main supplier of top jazz talent for the region and also for the international jazz scene. Jamaica has given to the world a number of great jazz musicians such as Bertie King, Jiver Hutchinson, Joe Harriott, Cecil Lloyd, Dizzy Reece, etc. The Jamaica Ocho Rios Jazz Festival is very boastful of its local jazz musicians and features many musicians and groups dedicated to jazz.

The Annual Jamaica International Ocho Rios Jazz Festival dates back to 1991 when it was first started as an experimental one-day event called the Ocho Rios Mini Jazz Festival. The famous musician and journalist Sonny Brandshaw, a jazz pioneer, produced and directed the festival. The main reason to start the festival was to redefine the musical scene of Jamaica and to provide entertainment and an enjoyable atmosphere for families. With that in mind, Father’s Day was chosen for the event. The festival was first held in Carib Inn Beach of Ocho Rios under the byline Greatest Names in Jamaican Jazz. Within a span of three years the event grew from one to eight days and became the Caribbean’s complete jazz vacation.

The festival features some of the greatest names in jazz. This year’s line up will include Joe Sizemore and Friends, Pie Grande, Pat Braxton and Niki Walters performances.The festival organises community concerts, exhibitions and also boasts Youth Programs. It has established Jazz Hall of Fame Awards which recognises Jamaican and Caribbean musicians who have contributed to the art and distinguished themselves internationally.

In addition to the visitor’s search for sun, sea and fun in June, the Ocho Rios Jazz Festival offers the unique cultural cross-fertilisation of musicians, painters, artistes, Jamaican art & crafts and jazz for the youth.
