A NEW GREEN CHAPTER FOR THE MONTE-CARLO BAY HOTEL & RESORT, MONACO

A pioneer in sustainable development, and one of the first hotels in the Principality to receive the prestigious Green Globe environmental certification in 2014, the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort, Monaco, successfully continues its commitment by being awarded the Gold Standard certification.

All India, 18th August 2018:

Frederic Darnet, General Manager of the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort would like to congratulate all the teams: “This Green Globe Gold certification is not an end but a beginning and I would like to congratulate Bay Be Green Team for this daily commitment. We must consider the environmental, economic, industrial and even societal impact of any action we take.”

A pioneering institution in sustainable development

On 23 April 2014, the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort, as a flagship and pilot hotel “Green” of the Société des Bains de Mer became one of the first hotels in the Principality of Monaco to receive the Green Globe environmental certification. The high level of the prestigious international label, Green Globe, and the recent obtaining of the Gold Standard in June 2018 prove once again the constant commitment of the establishment as regards in sustainable development. A demanding level of certification, which only the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort and Monte-Carlo Beach, achieved in the Principality since yet.

A global mobilization of all employees

Since October 2013, the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort has set up the “Bay Be Green Team”, a dedicated team, which organizes and monitors this environmental approach.

Marcel Ravin, a starred and committed Chef

Sustainable development is a must in the resort’s kitchens, thanks to Chef Marcel Ravin, a starred chef who defends good food as well as the planet in general.

A strong commitment that stands out from the ground to the plate! Cooking seasonal fruits and vegetables, freshly harvested nearby is more than an involvement, a priority for Marcel Ravin. At Blue Bay, the signature restaurant of Monte-Carlo Bay, the vegetables picked a few steps away are in the heart of the dish, with meat and fish as a supplement. Last year, the “Mister Good Fish” charter was signed, allowing to respect the marine resources, thanks to a list which enumerates recommended species by season. The Chef also collaborates with the start-up Terre de Monaco, founded by Jessica Sbaraglia, creator of urban organic vegetable gardens, including the Monte-Carlo Bay vegetable garden.

Major projects in favour of energy savings

The Smart + pilot project

The Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort successfully continues its commitment to the environment by becoming a pilot establishment in Monaco for implementation of the Energy Transition by signing the National Pact for Energy Transition at the Grimaldi Forum on 23 march 2018.

A hotel consumes a lot of energy, especially for lighting, heating and hot water. Making our facility energy efficient was therefore a major environmental issue” explains Achour Daira, Technical Director. Today, the hotel reconciles successfully quality of service, competitiveness and energy control, in particular thanks to the installation of the Smart+ pilot system that will allow it to save the equivalent of one month of energy per year!

Key actions implemented in the framework of the energy transition:

  • Changing the lighting, replacing 8,000 conventional bulbs with LEDs, in the hotel’s rooms and bathrooms, apartments, upstairs corridors, seminar rooms, restaurants, bars, spa and gardens, resulting in annual reductions of 5% to 8% of energy consumption.
  • Modulation of air conditioning and heating schedules in unoccupied spaces
  • Replacement of conventional LCD TVs with LED TV.

Current and future projects:

  • Replacement of underwater pool and lagoon lighting with LED lights
  • LED lighting in all gardens
  • Installation of photovoltaic panels on the hotel roof allowing to produce 170 000 kWh/year. This project should see the light of day within a year.

All these projects in favour of energy savings are remarkable and will allow the hotel to pass below the bar of 8 million kWh/year as early as 2019, i.e. a drop of nearly 30% of energy consumption in only 8 years.

Prestigious awards

All these steps have been crowned with success since the Monte-Carlo Bay Hotel & Resort has received the Green Globe Gold standard and is certified Eco-Leader TripAdvisor. It was also the first hotel to obtain in May 2017 the Trophy e+: in the presence of the Minister of State and Authorities, SMEG rewarded the commitment of Monegasque companies and individuals, all of whom have contributed to consuming more respectful energy for the environment.
